TRAINING FOR AN ALPINE BACKYARD ULTRA: CONQUER THE 6.71KM LOOP AT ALTITUDE

Why Alpine Training Matters

Training for a standard backyard ultra is one thing - but tackling one at 1,500 m elevation in the Australian Alps is a different story. The Aussie Alpine Backyard Ultra, hosted by FOMO Trails, pushes runners to dig deeper both physically and mentally.

To perform your best at Falls Creek, you’ll need to prepare for three key challenges: altitude, terrain, and the unique hourly format.

Train for Terrain and Elevation

Falls Creek’s alpine landscape features rolling trails, uneven surfaces, and punchy climbs. To mimic those conditions:

* Include hill repeats in your weekly sessions to build leg strength.

* Run on trails, not pavement — practice footing on rocks, roots, and gravel.

* Train at elevation if possible; if not, simulate it with stair climbs and treadmill inclines.

The goal is to build endurance and confidence on variable terrain, so nothing surprises you on race day.

Pacing for the Backyard Format

Every loop of the 6.71 km course must be completed within an hour. That means pacing and efficiency are key:

* Aim for 45–50 minutes per loop during training.

* Use the remaining 10–15 minutes to simulate rest, refuel, and reset.

* Practice your transitions - efficient breaks make a big difference late in the event.

Remember: the format rewards steady runners, not speedsters.

Nutrition and Recovery

Backyard ultras are as much about fueling as they are about running.

* Practice your race-day nutrition - test snacks, hydration, and electrolytes.

* Eat small amounts regularly to maintain energy levels.

* Keep warm layers and dry clothes ready between loops - alpine conditions can change quickly, even in summer.

Mental Strategies for Success

Running loop after loop can test your resolve.

* Set small goals - focus on one lap at a time.

* Visualize success - imagine yourself starting each loop strong.

* Lean on the community - cheer on others, share smiles, and draw energy from the collective spirit.
