START THE NEW YEAR WITH AUSTRALLIA'S FIRST ALPINE BACKYARD ULTRA AT FALLS CREEK
A New Year’s Challenge Like No Other
If you’re a trail runner who loves a challenge, there’s no better way to kick off your year than the Aussie Alpine Backyard Ultra at Falls Creek, hosted by FOMO Trails. This one-of-a-kind event blends breathtaking alpine scenery with the intensity of a true endurance format — and it all happens in one of Victoria’s most iconic mountain villages.
The event takes place on New Year’s Eve, giving runners the chance to celebrate the start of a new year with grit, determination, and a healthy dose of adventure.
What Makes It “Alpine” — and Why That Matters
Falls Creek, nestled high in Victoria’s Alpine National Park, is known for its rugged terrain, crisp air, and sweeping mountain views. At over 1,500m elevation, this setting transforms the typical backyard ultra into a test of both physical endurance and mental resilience.
Expect a mix of singletrack, firetrails, ski runs, and undulating gradients that make each 6.71 km loop uniquely challenging. Every hour on the hour, runners line up again — ready to see how far they can go.
The Backyard Ultra Format
For newcomers to the Backyard Ultra concept, here’s how it works:
* The course is exactly 6.71 km long.
* Runners start every hour on the hour.
* You must complete your loop within that hour to continue.
* The event continues until only one runner remains — the Last One Standing.
It’s not about speed; it’s about consistency, pacing, and endurance. Each runner manages their rest, nutrition, and strategy between loops, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and respect.
For Runners and Support Crews Alike
The race hub in the Falls Creek Village Bowl has everything you need — an aid station, amenities, and a buzzing event atmosphere. Kids betweeen 6-12 are alo FREE to enter with a registered adult companion, so the whole family can get involved.
Between loops, runners can rest, refuel, and connect with a community of like-minded adventurers. Whether you’re there to win or just to test yourself for a few laps, the vibe is supportive, social, and unforgettable.
